ColonialInnsAndTaverns

The country road meanders along the swift moving waters of the Delaware river, occasionally coming treacherously close to the steep river bank. Along this historic road, I follow the steps of William Penn and Revolutionary soldiers.

Around a sharp corner a large colonial home comes into view. The sturdy structure with painted wood shingles and dormer windows overlooks the swift river. This serene setting is perfect for the old home now turned bed and breakfast.

As I gaze upon this proud structure I imagine troops wearing tricorne hats, knocking on the door asking for a bite to eat and a warm place to sleep. I imagine the many famous guests resting and eating here. I’m in Bucks County Pennsylvania where many off these historic Inns dot the landscape. It would be wonderful to learn of the history behind these wonderful buildings.

Visiting Peddler’s Village I discovered the bookColonial Inns and Taverns of Bucks County: How Pubs, Taprooms and Hostelries Made Revolutionary History. This book is the perfect companion to a self guided tour of the many historic structures scattered throughout the rolling land of Buck’s County.

While reading you will learn the important roll inns and taverns of colonial times played during the Revolutionary War and then later during the Civil War. Many where used to rescue slaves from the south through and intricate underground railroad.

From the early settlers trying to escape religious prosecution in Europe through the Civil War, Buck’s County has been key to American history. One way to enjoy the rich heritage and cultural sites is through a self guided tour. Colonial Inns and Taverns of Bucks County is a great reference for your tour. Many of the buildings described in the book have been turned into quaint shops, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants so you should have fun during your tour.

Colonial Inns and Taverns of Bucks County offers a brief history of Pennsylvania and the important role Inns and Taverns played in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War. The book further details the development of a canal system used to transport coal before the advent of Railroads. With many recent and historic photos scattered throughout the book you can view before and after pictures and to see how the area has developed, but also realize that some things never change.
