With every turn the landscape changes from pristine ponds with pink flamingos, to dense wooded walks and scurrying squirrels. The lush tropical paradise has many tall trees which means shade is only steps away which is welcome in the hot Florida climate.

The swampy banana grove was originally purchased by a local newspaper man with intentions of turning it into a tropical garden. A variety of subtropical species brought in from around the world, the addition of rescued animals, and the dutiful care of the gardens made it popular amongst the many visiting guests.

The unintentional tourist destination was opened over 60 years ago and has become one of the most popular places to visit in the area. Proudly they are the only zoological garden in the area.

Brilliant Exotic Birds and Majestic Birds of Prey

All the birds of prey in the gardens have been injured and cannot return to the wild. Many of the exotic birds have been donated by owners unable to care for them as pets. A wide variety of colorful birds can be found throughout the gardens with many roaming freely making me feel as if I was their guest.

There are numerous opportunities to take pictures of the birds in their natural habitat. In the bird posing area helpful staff are more than willing to assist you in having your picture taken with one of the exotic birds.

Fun and Educational Animal Shows

A variety of animal shows are presented throughout the gardens. The most impressive is the Birds of Prey Exhibition. I sat transfixed as a young lady handled the many large birds some of which could easily have bit her fingers off.

At the end of the show the young bird handler placed a hissing cockroach in her mouth trying to convince the crowd cockroaches are as nutritious as shrimp. I don’t think they taste as good and I am not willing to find out. This is one bird show I will never forget.

All Will Enjoy This Tropical Paradise

The Sarasota Jungle Gardens is a great place to visit since they cater to a wide audience. Looking for a day of contemplation then I suggest your taking a leisurely stroll through the serene botanical gardens and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Kids will enjoy the jungle gyms and the many shows where they can actually pet some of the animals or watch alligators show off their impressive strong jaws. The young ones will even have an opportunity to touch creepy crawly snakes and spiders

All the exhibits are accessible and make for easy navigation with baby strollers and wheel chairs. I was very impressed by the ability for all guests to enjoy the many exhibits in this one of a kind botanical zoo and garden.
