Discover Why Meteorites Collide with Earth at Moncton History Museum.

By carlvaleri | November 24, 2009

Ever wonder why meteorites collide with Earth and what happens when they do hit the earth? Well you can learn the answer to these questions at Riding With Meteorites at the Moncton Museum of History.

An exhibit design for kids and adults a combination of fascinating facts, dramatic interactive display, and actual artifacts from meteorites make this a unique temporary exhibit. The exhibit is Open from September 14, 2009 to January 17, 2010.

The Largest Meteorite on Earth

Over 80,000 years ago a Meteorite fell to earth on the Hoba Farm in Namibia located in southwest Africa. The museum has a replica of the Meteorite which weights over 60 tons.

The amazing aspect of this meteorite is the fact there is no impact crater. Scientist speculate due to the trajectory it may have bounced as a rock does on water and landed in its current location with all the energy depleted.

Canadian Meteorites

The exhibition also features fragments from several Canadian meteorites, including the famous St-Robert meteorite that fell on June 14, 1994.

Claud LaCroix, a Franciscan Priest, has the largest collection of Meteorites in Quebec and has loaned many fragments to the Moncton Museum for this display. Claude is an amazing individual who is well know for his traveling biblical exhibits which include artifacts from the Middle East.

Riding with Meteorites explores the influence of meteorites in the human imagination, in movies and in comic books. Two characters Teo the astronaut and Laika the space dog take visitors on a journey through the galaxy with numerous interactive exhibits and videos.

A Growing Museum.

The Moncton Museum is one place I always stop when visiting Moncton due to their ever changing exhibits. I’m excited to see they will be building a large wing on the museum to expand the collections and exhibit space. Much of the new exhibit will concentrate on the transportation industry which played a key role in the development of Moncton.

The exhibit closes January 17, 2009 and if you are in the Moncton area I highly suggest your visiting because I can almost gauruntee you will learn something about meteorites. Admission to the museum is free with a suggested donation. All exhibits are accessable with an elevator up to the second floor.
