Freeport Maine, More than L.L. Bean
By carlvaleri | December 21, 2009
A wonderful discovery during our coastal lighthouse tour is the vibrant village of Freeport, Maine. Unique shops, a variety of restaurants, pristine parks, quaint inns, and historic buildings will keep any visitor busy for days. Less than twenty miles from Portland we decided to take the more scenic Route 1. We where entertained by the unique tourist attractions and shops as we drove, daring not to stop and risk spending the money we saved to use at L.L. Bean.
We came to visit the L.L. Bean factory outlet store, but discovered there is more to Freeport than visiting one of the most successful mail order companies in the United States. Various upscale boutique shops fill this New England Village. With over 200 shops you are bound to find something for everyone on your gift list this holiday season.
A five minute drive from downtown is Wolfe’s Neck State Park. Walk along serene wooded trails as they meander toward rocky beaches of Casco Bay. For a dramatic view of the park, rent a kayak and follow the pristine evergreen lined coast.
A Desert in Maine
Would you believe there is a desert in Maine? A glacier slid through the area at the end of the ice age and deposited sand and minerals in its path. As centuries past topsoil covered the large sand desert.
In 1797 the Tuttle family settled this area and successfully raised crops. Due to clearing the land, grazing, and failure to rotate crops the topsoil eroded and exposed the desert beneath. Now the natural phenomenon is part of a the tourist attraction The Desert of Maine.
Rich History in the “Birthplace of Maine”
After the American Revolution the District of Maine petitioned to separate from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Legend has it meetings where held in Freeport during the quest for separation, thus leading to the namesake as the Birthplace of Maine.
Learn what it was like to live during the 18th century in Freeport by visiting the Harrington House or Pettengill Farm. To learn more about the history of this wonderful village visit the Freeport Historical Societiy website.
More than A Day Trip
I suggest your staying at least 3 days if you want to take in all Freeport has to offer. If you have come to shop there are over 200 stores which will keep you entertained for days. I suggest you also spend a day or two enjoying the natural beauty and heritage of Freeport.
